Why hot dip galvanizing?
There are several methods to produce zinc coating. When you compare the characteristics of mechanically plated items - coating thickness, bond strength and integrity - with those that have been hot dip galvanized or even electroplated, there are clear differences.
Mechanical zinc plating is achieved by tumbling small components in a mixture of promoter chemicals, zinc powder and tiny glass beads. On impact, the beads actually hammer the zinc powder into the parts. This process can have severe limitations. Mechanical bonding is intrinsically weaker than chemical or electrical bonding. Complex designs may not be thoroughly coated in every recess; media residue can lodge in these recesses or in the threads of fittings or flanges. Edges, corners and thread coating thicknesses are usually lower at these points due to the peening action of the process.
In contrast, hot dipped galvanizing provides more than 30% more zinc per unit volume than mechanical coating, with a consequent increase in protection. Parts are immersed in a bath of molten zinc, then react metallurgically to produce a coating consisting of a series of zinc-iron alloys and a surface layer of almost pure zinc. This coating is intrinsic to the metal, with a bond several orders of magnitude stronger than the mechanical zinc plating. Immersion ensures that the area of the component is adequately coated; vulnerable edges, corners and threads actually receive a thicker coating than the flat surfaces. Even if the coating is scratched, or removed, the zinc-iron layers provide sacrificial anodic protection. Exposed steel on a hot dipped galvanized part will not rust until the coating is depleted.
